About

Kimi K3.1 Pro (moonshotai/Kimi-K3.1-Pro, released October 23, 2026 under the Kimi K3.1 Pro License) is Moonshot AI's open-weight, natively multimodal agentic model and the first model in the K3.1 series — its most capable 3T-class model to date. It is post-trained from Kimi K3 with large-scale joint reinforcement learning across hundreds of downstream domains, delivering substantial improvements in coding, 3D creation, financial research, factual accuracy, and other agentic capabilities.

Architecture

A 2.8T-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model that activates 104B parameters per token, with 93 layers (1 dense + 69 KDA + 24 Gated DSA attention layers), activating 16 of 896 routed experts plus 2 shared experts. Compared with Kimi K3, the full-attention Gated MLA layers are replaced with Gated DeepSeek Sparse Attention (Gated DSA) layers for more efficient long-context modeling; the DSA index uses 32 index heads at head dimension 128 with a top-k of 2048. Attention combines KDA and Gated DSA, uses 96 attention heads at attention hidden dimension 7168, and feeds a Stable LatentMoE (latent MoE dimension 3584, per-expert MoE hidden dimension 3072) with SiTU-GLU activation, following the same MoE sparsity framework as Kimi K3.

  • Context window: 1,048,576 tokens (1M) native.
  • Vision: MoonViT-V2 encoder (401M parameters); modality is text + image input.
  • Quantization: MXFP4 weights / MXFP8 activations via quantization-aware training; the released checkpoint ships as compressed-tensors mxfp4-pack-quantized weights (config.json model_type: kimi_k31, architectures class KimiK31ForConditionalGeneration over a kimi_linear text module).
  • Reasoning control: thinking effort is configured per request via reasoning_effort ("low" / "high" / "max", default "max").

Deployment

Recommended inference engines are vLLM, SGLang and TokenSpeed (recipes/cookbooks linked from the model card); the API at platform.kimi.ai is exposed as kimi-k3.1-pro with OpenAI/Anthropic-compatible endpoints and supports preserved thinking via reasoning_content in multi-turn conversations.

What makes it special

  • First model in the K3.1 series: 3T-class open weights with sparse-attention long-context modeling (Gated DSA) instead of full-attention layers.
  • Strong agentic performance: evaluated across coding (Terminal-Bench 4.0 65.7, DeepSWE v1.1 75.5), agentic browsing and office tasks (BrowseComp 92.1, OSWorld V2.1 79.6), and knowledge/reasoning/multimodal suites (GPQA-Diamond 94.2, MMMU-Pro 84.1, HLE-Full w/ tools 70.0), generally at reasoning effort max with temperature 1.0 and top-p 0.95.

Training Data Post-trained from Kimi K3 with large-scale joint reinforcement learning across hundreds of downstream domains; quantization-aware training (MXFP4 weights / MXFP8 activations)

Training Pipeline

  1. 1
    pretraining

    Pretraining (inherited Kimi K3 base)

The HF model card states Kimi K3.1 Pro is "post-trained from Kimi K3", so the pretrained base checkpoint is inherited from the Kimi K3 release rather than trained anew for K3.1 Pro; the sibling Kimi K3 record documents that Kimi K3 itself was pretrained from scratch. No new pretraining evidence for K3.1 Pro appears on this card.

  2. 2
    cpt

    Mid-training (continued pretraining)

The tech blog documents a mid-training stage in K3.1 Pro's training pipeline: cyber-related content was embedded within the general mid-training corpus (inherited from the K3 lineage's broad data), and for the open-weight release Moonshot identified and removed cyber-related data at the mid-training stage while retaining the general-purpose coding tasks needed for usefulness. An internal checkpoint trained with no mid-training data removal scored 90.5% vs the released model's 81.0% on xdev-bench-hard (pass@3).

  3. 3
    rl

    Large-scale joint RL post-training

Per the HF card, K3.1 Pro is "post-trained from Kimi K3 with large-scale joint reinforcement learning across hundreds of downstream domains". The tech blog adds that K3.1 Pro is a post-trained version of Kimi K3 with substantially larger post-training compute, and that to make large-scale joint RL stable the team optimized every layer of the stack (RL framework, long-context inference, training efficiency, sandbox infrastructure, rollout scheduling, environment quality checks). For the open-weight release, cyber-related tasks were also filtered from the RL environment mix.
